Contraban is Jordi Esteve's nod to the border — and to the history of wines that crossed it freely when they weren't supposed to. The name references the strict laws during Franco's dictatorship that made black market trade over the Roussillon frontier a necessity. Each year the blend includes fruit from a Roussillon grower on the French side, the source shifting with the vintage. This 2023 is all estate fruit: 95% Lledoner Negre from 40-year-old vines, 5% Muscat from a 60-year-old parcel, both on fully slate soils. Co-macerated for 36 hours, pressed, fermented spontaneously, then rested on full lees for six months. No fining, no filtration, no sulphites added.
