The 2025 chapter of Malaparte’s nomadic project lands in Ávila — 90-year-old ungrafted Graciano vines at 800 metres, a grape almost never seen as a single variety, and only 1,485 bottles to show for it.
Graciano • Castilla y León / Ávila • Uvas Nómadas • Amphora and old oak • 1,485 bottles
After Tenerife’s Listán Negro in 2024, Elisa and Rubén stay closer to home for 2025 but find something just as rare. Graciano is one of Spain’s most characterful red varieties — high acidity, intense colour, and an aromatic profile that most producers blend away rather than bottle alone. These vines are 90 years old, own-rooted, on stony soils in Castellanos de Zapardiel in Ávila, certified organic, hand-harvested in late September. Fermented spontaneously in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, then aged in a combination of clay amphora and used barrels on its lees for several months before cold stabilisation and bottling.
Another forgotten grape, another 1,485 reasons to pay attention.
