Julien Renard is French-born, based in Winningen on the steep slate terraces of the Mosel, and makes a very small quantity of Chardonnay each year as a side project — sourcing fruit from his friend Christopher Barth's 20-year-old vines in Alzey, Rheinhessen. The grapes are direct-pressed, fermented spontaneously in small used barrels, and left on fine lees for 16–20 months before bottling unfiltered. No bâtonnage, no shortcuts.
The result sits somewhere between the Mosel and the Jura — precise, textured, and almost impossible to place. Citrus oil, mint, salt, and a seamless mid-palate that takes its time revealing itself.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: citrus zest, white flowers, mint, subtle reduction
Palate: stone fruit, lemon oil, fine saline thread
Texture: silky, almost weightless, with a quiet density
Finish: sharp, long, and persistently mineral
