Chardonnay from a technically illegal vineyard in Baden, planted in 1982 when the grape wasn’t permitted in the region. Soft, fruity, and aged 18 months on gross lees in old Burgundy oak. Worth the rule-breaking.

Chardonnay • Baden • Old Burgundy barrels • Planted 1982 • 505 bottles

Emilie and Robrecht found their Chardonnay in a Baden vineyard planted in 1982 — a year when the variety wasn’t legally authorised in the region. Someone planted it anyway. Four decades later, those vines produce fruit that goes straight from full-bunch gentle crushing to the press, then into 220-litre ex-Burgundy barrels with no débourbage for 18 months on gross lees. No additives, nothing removed. The lees ageing gives it a softness and roundness that keeps it easy despite the barrel time.

Soft, fruity, and quietly confident.
