Vivid, mineral red from the volcanic slopes of Szent György-hegy — four nearly forgotten Hungarian varieties, fermented separately and aged in terracotta amphora above Lake Balaton.
Kék Bakator, Kékfrankos, Hajnos Kék, Kadarka • Badacsony • Demeter biodynamic
István Bencze started making wine on the volcanic basalt slopes of Szent György-hegy in 2011, farmed organically from day one and Demeter-certified biodynamic since 2014. He's now considered the pioneer of natural winemaking in Hungary. The Autochton Red is his most site-specific statement: four indigenous varieties — Kék Bakator, Kékfrankos, Hajnos Kék, and Kadarka — that had largely disappeared from Hungarian viticulture, harvested separately, fermented spontaneously, and matured in terracotta amphora for a year before bottling without fining, filtration, or added sulphur.
The volcanic basalt and clay soils of Badacsony do the rest.
