Tempranillo and Syrah from Malaparte’s own certified organic vines at 890 metres in Cuéllar — 12 months in old oak and a mineral backbone that belongs entirely to the limestone plateau of Castilla y León.
Tempranillo, Syrah • Castilla y León / Cuéllar • Certified organic • 12 months in oak
Elisa de Frutos and Rubén Salamanca have been farming their own vines biodynamically near Cuéllar since 2018. The Las Lomas Tinto comes from their certified organic estate: 40-year-old vines on poor white calcareous limestone and marl soils at 890 metres, 5,000 vines per hectare at just 3,500kg/ha yield. Hand-harvested in late September in 20kg crates, fermented separately in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts at low temperatures, then moved into a mix of 225, 400, and 600-litre barrels for 12 months. Cold stabilised, 6,400 bottles made.
Tempranillo does something different on limestone at this altitude — less fruit-forward, more mineral and structured than the warm, plummy style of lower Castile.
